by Saul Hopkins

A narrow alleyway in Kyoto’s Gion district fades into a thick, gray mist at dawn, where the damp stone pavement reflects the soft, diffused light. An elderly shopkeeper stands in the doorway of a traditional machiya, wearing a dark indigo happi coat, carefully arranging bright red shiso leaves and green grapes on a wooden counter. Beside the fruit sits a simple ceramic thermos, steam barely visible against the cool air. The dark, weathered wood of the sliding door and a hanging noren curtain that sways slightly.
