Trimming Moss in Kyoto

Wet slate steps of a Kyoto machiya slip under the gray wash of early morning rain, leading up to a dark wooden entrance where a gardener in a soaked indigo jacket bends to trim moss from the stone edging. Rainwater beads on the polished red lacquered wood of the sliding door frame, against the dull gray of the wet pavement. In the shallow foreground, a woven mending basket sits near the threshold, holding a few scattered tools including a brass awl and a pin cushion, left out to dry. The light is flat and diffused, reflecting softly off the damp surfaces without harsh shadows, showing the quiet industry of maintenance in a historic district.
