Winter Surf Tetrapods Under Ontario Towers

by Emily McConnell

Neon-green warning beacons pulse atop steel lattice towers that rise into a perfectly clear, ink-black sky. Below, massive black concrete tetrapods cluster along the shoreline, their rough, weathered surfaces slick with sea spray. The water churns violently against the structures, sending white foam crashing upward in late autumn. Bright maintenance floodlights cut through the darkness, illuminating the wet texture of the concrete and the chaotic motion of the surf. Shadows stretch sharply across the ground, showing the sheer scale of the infrastructure. One droplet of seawater rests on the corner of a foreground tetrapod, catching the harsh artificial light.
