Monsoon Quarry Terraces Near Yangon

by Glen Sutton

Wet, terraced stone walls rise in massive stepped layers, their grey surfaces slick with recent rain and darkened by the heavy monsoon air. Low-hanging clouds press against the upper rim of the excavation, diffusing the late afternoon sun into a soft, even glow that eliminates harsh shadows. The quarry steps create strong diagonal lines receding deep into the pit, guiding the view toward the distant, mist-shrouded horizon. Water gathers in shallow pools within the lower ledges, reflecting the dull grey sky. The rough, fractured texture of the exposed rock contrasts with the smooth, water-sheened surfaces of the cut faces, showing the sheer scale of the industrial excavation against the humid, overcast sky. A dark shadow falls across the deepest recess of the bottom tier.
