Water Tower House at Sunrise in Sana'a

by Dan Holt

First rays of sunrise strike the rim of a cylindrical water tower converted to a residence, standing against the rough, wind-scarred stone of a fortress wall in Sana'a. Low-hanging monsoon clouds drift at eye level, softening the sky while the ground remains damp and dark. The tower's concrete surface shows vertical streaks from recent rain, lying beside the warm, reddish-brown hue of the ancient masonry behind it. Converging lines from the fortress ramparts and the tower's own structure extend toward a distant vanishing point obscured by mist. One window on the upper level reflects the first golden rays, glowing faintly against the cool, gray stone of the surrounding architecture. Wet stone textures rest on the ground, and the solidity of the tower's base anchors the composition.
