Envelope Sorter on Museum Plinth in Sana'a

by Sergio Evans

Soft overcast light falls through the high windows of a Sana'ani museum, casting gentle shadows across a wooden plinth. Resting atop the display is a metal expense-envelope sorter, its slots filled with colorful administrative documents from HR, procurement, and facilities departments. The thumbnails of these papers show faint text and stamps, tiny details visible from the overhead three-quarter angle. Rain streaks the glass walls outside, blurring the ancient stone architecture of the city beyond. Warm interior shadows pool around the base of the plinth, against the cool gray of the rainy season sky. The metal surface of the sorter reflects a dull, matte sheen, while the edges of the paper stacks catch the diffused illumination. A small dust mote settles on the corner of the topmost envelope, anchoring the stillness of the administrative objects.
