Water Hyacinth Choking Tropical Waterway at Night in in a bloom-heavy meadow in Yunnan

Water Hyacinth Choking Tropical Waterway at Night

by Hunter Mueller

Thick mats of water hyacinth dominate the dark surface of a tropical waterway in Yunnan, their broad leaves overlapping in dense, chaotic layers. Under a deep night sky, the plants exist mostly in shadow, yet a sharp rim light outlines the curved edges of the leaves and the pale undersides of the flower stalks. Distant haze hangs low on the horizon, softening the background into a gray veil while the foreground remains sharply defined. The texture of the waxy leaves is visible where the light strikes, revealing deep green veins and smooth surfaces. The plants press tightly together, creating a solid wall of vegetation that fills the frame from edge to edge.
