Upward Rain Over Helwan Sorting Belt

by Johnnie Hanson

Flat noon light slices through fabric curtains, illuminating dust motes that hang suspended in the air of a Helwan parcel sorting facility. High-visibility vests in bright orange and yellow stripes stand against the grey steel of a break cage and a moving conveyor belt. Silver water bottles rest on the metal grating, their surfaces reflecting the strange, upward-falling rain. Crisp silver streaks of liquid defy gravity, shooting vertically from the floor and bouncing off the vests before vanishing into the ceiling. The scene is a study in commercial urgency, where the wet streaks create sharp, bright reflections on the steel surfaces. One water bottle near the edge catches a droplet mid-air, freezing the impossible motion against the industrial backdrop.
