Water-Powered Forge Trip Hammer Near Bamenda Stream

by Randi Bridges

Diffused skylight falls through a heavy layer of factory dust, casting a soft, metallic haze over the workshop floor. A massive iron trip hammer stands rigid on a raised scaffold platform, its heavy head poised above a glowing anvil. To the left, a stream flows rapidly beside the structure, its water turning the unseen waterwheel that drives the mechanism. The cool season air leaves the metal surfaces dull and cool-toned, against the faint orange glow of the heated iron. Wooden beams and rusted iron rails create strong leading lines that guide the view toward the central machinery. one drop of molten metal rests on the edge of the anvil, cooling into a dark, jagged shape.
