Trilobite Eye Detail Twilight Study

by Eli O'Neal

Dark rain droplets rest on the rough, carbonized surface of a fossilized trilobite eye. The hexagonal facets of the compound lens rise in sharp, geometric ridges against a background of deep shadow. A cool, silver rim light traces the outer edge of the specimen, highlighting the jagged texture of the ancient rock matrix. Midsummer dampness coats the stone in a fine, glistening sheen, turning the black calcite into a mirror for the fading twilight. Tiny water beads rest in the crevices between the lenses, refracting the dim ambient glow into micro-sparks. at the edge is a single droplet sliding down a facet, leaving a wet streak across the fossil's face.
