Autumn Trilobite Fossil Dark Shale Firelight
by Eric Hughes
Deep amber light from a nearby fire illuminates a fossilized trilobite embedded in a slab of dark, matte shale. The stone surface appears rough and granular, against the smoother, segmented ridges of the ancient arthropod preserved within. Pale beige and cream tones of the fossil stand out sharply against the charcoal-gray rock matrix. The lighting casts deep, soft shadows into the crevices of the exoskeleton, highlighting the three-dimensional relief of the thorax and head. Outside the immediate glow, the background hints at heavy, swirling storm clouds visible through a window, suggesting a late autumn night near Antwerp. The texture of the shale is uneven, with small chips and natural fractures surrounding the specimen.
