Trilobite Spine Microscope Archive Prep
by Rex Orr
Clean white laboratory light floods the workspace, illuminating dust motes suspended in the air near a specimen archive in Karadeniz Ereğli. A precision microscope dominates the foreground, its brass and steel components gleaming under the midday sun. The lens hovers millimeters above a delicate trilobite spine resting on a dark preparation tray. The fossil's segmented carapace shows intricate ridges and a sharp, central spine that catches the light. Surrounding the microscope, shelves hold labeled glass jars and archival folders typical of a late spring scientific collection. The surface of the tray is matte black, absorbing light and making the pale fossil stand out in high contrast. A faint shadow from the microscope arm falls across the edge of the tray, at the base of the instrument in the quiet, analytical space.
