Sydney Canal Lock Algae Slicked Chamber from Above

by Shawn Goodman

Concrete walls of the lock chamber rise steeply from the water, their surfaces stained with thick green algae and dark vertical rope marks that track the movement of heavy lines. Beside the water, a keeper cabin sits with a flat roof, its weathered siding contrasting against the industrial gray of the lock. Mooring bollards stand like dark sentinels at the water's edge, their rusted metal heads catching the soft, diffused light of the overcast sky. Above, massive transmission towers loom, their steel lattice structure casting faint, fragmented shadows across the scene. Heat shimmer ripples visibly off the sun-struck concrete surfaces, distorting the air just above the ground. The perspective looks directly down from the sky, showing the geometric precision of the infrastructure against the organic growth of the algae.
