Surreal Wind Substation Moss Storm Barrier in beside a storm surge barrier in Suriname

Surreal Wind Substation Moss Storm Barrier

by Leroy Heath

Amber light floods the steel skeleton of a wind farm substation nestled below turning turbine blades. The structure sits beside a massive storm surge barrier in Suriname. Every vertical surface, from the support beams to the transformer casings, is draped in thick moss and grass that grows sideways, defying gravity. The ground remains a flat, wet moor of dark earth and scattered puddles reflecting the low sun. Seasonal changes hang in the air, visible through the vibrant green textures overtaking the industrial gray. The blades spin slowly above, casting long, shifting shadows across the overgrown metal. One patch of grass rests on the edge of a rusted railing, anchoring the impossible growth to the rigid frame.
