Frozen Pagoda Reflection in Chapel Dawn

by Jasmine Nava

Pale dawn light streams through stained glass panels, painting the stone floor of a Hongkou chapel in shifting hues of amber, violet, and teal. A perfect pagoda stands centered in the composition, its structure mirrored flawlessly in a pool of water on the ground. Suspended mid-air around the structure are dozens of water droplets and fallen leaves, frozen in a moment of descent that defies gravity. The droplets catch the colored light, glowing like suspended jewels against the cool stone. Every surface reflects the impossible stillness, from the wet stone to the glass panes. One droplet hanging near the edge of the water pool holds a tiny, inverted image of the pagoda's roof.
