Courthouse Bench Under Blue Hour Sky
by Carter Small
Damp wool coats hang heavily over the wooden backrest of a civic bench situated in a corridor near Sandvika. Tall windows frame the fading blue hour sky, casting a cool, uniform light across the room that competes with the harsh, artificial glow of government floodlights mounted high on the wall. The damp fabric absorbs the blue ambient light while the wood grain reflects the warmer electric spill. A surreal anomaly disrupts the architecture: a fully leafed tree grows horizontally out of the plaster wall, its branches extending parallel to the floor and resting just above the coat rack. The leaves are a vibrant, impossible green against the sterile grey concrete. Shadows from the tree branches fall sharply onto the wet floor, matching the angle of the floodlight shadows. One leaf rests on the wet wool of a sleeve.
