Sunflower Paddock Facing Dawn Near Naypyidaw

by Hayley Sims

Cold silver dawn light washes over a dense paddock of sunflowers standing in uniform rows. Each tall stalk tilts its heavy golden head toward the east, mirroring the others in a synchronized gesture. The air holds a visible haze of low dust that softens the edges of the terraced garden plots rising behind the flowers. Earthy browns of the soil contrast with the pale, unopened buds and the waxy green stems. Shadows stretch long and cool across the ground, indicating the sun has not yet broken the horizon. The stems appear rigid and sturdy, supporting the weight of the flower heads against the still morning air. At the base of the nearest stalk, a small cluster of dry grass blades lies flat against the dark earth.
