Uruguayan Sunflowers Facing West in Golden Light
by Marie Kelly
Rich amber light floods a sprawling paddock where rows of sunflowers stand shoulder to shoulder, their heavy heads turned in unison toward the setting sun. Late summer heat lingers in the air, softened by a thin layer of ground fog that rests on the lower stalks and mutes the distant horizon. The flower heads display deep brown centers surrounded by fading yellow petals, their textures rough and organic against the smooth, vertical stems. Layers of the field recede into the background, where the golden haze blends the individual plants into a unified wave of color. The nearest blooms show fine hairs on their leaves, catching the low angle of the light, while the final row dissolves into the soft white mist. One dewdrop rests on a petal edge, holding the fading sunlight.
