Sun Dance Drummers in Wadi Al-Seer Hall
by Pedro Phelps
Low sunset light streams through high windows of the Wadi Al-Seer concert hall, casting long, sharp shadows across the polished floor. A group of drummers sits in a circle, their hands raised mid-strike on large, taut drums. Dramatic, heavy rain clouds obscure the sky outside, casting a deep blue-gray tone that contrasts with the warm amber glow of the setting sun. Dust motes float in the beams of light, visible against the dark wood of the stage. The drummers wear traditional garments with intricate beadwork that catches the fading light. Long shadows stretch from their bodies toward the back of the hall, intersecting with the rhythmic lines of the seating rows. One drumhead vibrates slightly, blurring the texture of the skin under the harsh, directional sunlight.
