Decaying Iron Pier at Sunset Green Point Cape Town

by Leo Hurst

Rust-orange light washes over the skeletal remains of an iron pier extending into the Atlantic near Green Point. Flaking red paint peels from twisted girders that dissolve into the dark, churning water below. The early winter air hangs heavy and damp, clinging to the rough texture of the corroded metal and the wet stones at the water's edge. A dark wooden beam in the foreground creates a natural frame, drawing toward the fractured structure against the glowing horizon. The iron supports show deep pits of oxidation where the sea has eaten away the metal over decades. Puddles on the deck reflect the dying sky in shards of burnt orange and deep violet. A jagged piece of rusted rebar juts upward from the fractured concrete base.
