Star Trails Over Radio Telescope on Cameroon Breakwater

by Tara Stokes

Curved arcs of white starlight sweep across a pitch-black sky, framing the massive concrete dish of a radio telescope below. The structure sits on a dark breakwater where faint ground glow illuminates the wet concrete edge. Cold, dry air settles over the scene, sharpening the visibility of the stars against the deep indigo void. Below the dish, a calm pool of water mirrors the sweeping trails and the solid gray curve of the antenna, creating a symmetrical composition. The concrete surface shows rough textures and small puddles reflecting the ambient light. One shadow from the dish support structure falls across the wet ground, anchoring the celestial motion to the earth.
