Star Trails Over Radio Telescope from Moonlit Breakwater

by Nina Wright

Cold moonlight washes the rugged stones of a breakwater in shades of pale silver and deep indigo. A large radio telescope dish dominates the midground, its metallic surface reflecting the starlight with a dull, industrial sheen. The sky above is a vast, unbroken canvas of darkness where long, curved white arcs of star trails sweep across the frame, indicating the earth's rotation. Late autumn leaves rest on the dry, scrubby vegetation scattered along the rocky edge. The low angle emphasizes the dish's massive scale against the infinite celestial arc. A faint, cool reflection of the stars shimmers on the wet, smooth patches of the concrete barrier in the immediate foreground.
