Silhouetted Utility Poles Along Sicilian Canal Towpath in beside a storm surge barrier in Sicily

Silhouetted Utility Poles Along Sicilian Canal Towpath

by Lee Barrera

Low concrete slabs of a canal towpath stretch forward, bordered by a row of tall, rectangular utility poles that rise in stark silhouette against the setting sun. The horizon glows with a washed-out amber light, backlighting the rigid geometric forms of the infrastructure. Fine mist and spray from the nearby storm surge barrier hang suspended in the air, catching the edge of the light and creating a hazy veil over the gray surfaces. Midsummer heat radiates from the warm pavement, while the poles cast long, thin shadows that stretch across the path. At the base of the nearest pole, a small puddle reflects the dark outline of the structure and the bright sky above.
