Silhouetted Papyrus Capitals on Nebraska Cliff
by Arjun Mata
Umbrella-like papyrus capitals rise in a tight vertical column, their flat, layered tops forming a rhythmic geometric pattern against the sky. The golden hour sun sits low behind the structures, casting the stone into a deep, dark silhouette that obscures surface texture while highlighting the sharp, fan-shaped edges. Humid air hangs heavy, visible as a soft, shimmering haze that blurs the distant horizon where the cliff meets the sky. Salt spray coats the rough stone surfaces, catching the fading light in tiny, scattered glints along the upper ridges. The column stands isolated against a backdrop of muted, wet rock, with water droplets clinging to the lowest carved fronds. One wet bead of moisture slides slowly down the curved edge of the bottom capital, tracing a dark path through the dry stone.
