Papyrus Capitals in Guayaquil Evening Light in among terraced garden plots near Guayaquil

Papyrus Capitals in Guayaquil Evening Light

by Duane Bradford

Honeyed evening light spills across terraced garden plots near Guayaquil, illuminating a column of Egyptian papyrus capitals rising from the greenery. The dry season leaves the surrounding foliage crisp and golden-brown, against the vibrant green stalks. Wind whips the tall papyrus fronds, blurring their edges into soft, vertical streaks against the sharp, carved stone capitals. Shallow depth of field isolates the central column, rendering the background terraces into a wash of warm ochre and deep shadow. The carved lotus buds atop the capitals stand out in relief, their surfaces catching the last glow of the sun before nightfall. Shadows stretch long across the stone base, at the base of the structure in the earth.
