Papyrus Capitals in Vizianagaram Hypostyle Hall

by Lorraine Franklin

Rows of carved papyrus capitals rise from stone columns under the flat glare of noon. The capitals mimic bundled reeds with flared tops, their surfaces etched with geometric patterns that catch the harsh, dry mountain light. Low-hanging monsoon clouds obscure the sky, casting a diffuse, electric glow over the white stone. The columns recede in deep layers, creating a rhythmic tunnel that stretches into the distance. Dust motes hang suspended in the shafts of light, while the wet air seems to rest on the rough texture of the stone. The nearest capital shows a sharp, jagged edge where a petal-like leaf has been chiseled, against the smooth, shadowed recesses of the hall's interior.
