Papyrus Capitals Silhouetted in Muscat Evening Light

by Geraldine Dalton

Reflected water light paints the edges of stone papyrus capitals in a hypostyle hall near Muscat. The column tops stand in sharp silhouette against the deepening blue of the last evening sky. Autumn heat shimmers above the ground, distorting the lower stone surfaces with a gentle haze. The capitals display the characteristic bundled stems and spreading flower heads of the papyrus plant, carved in high relief. Warm orange and pink tones from the water reflection touch the upper stone edges, against the darkening shadows below. The texture of the weathered limestone feels rough and grainy where the light catches it. A final shadow stretches across the floor, marking the exact boundary where the columns meet the ground.
