Red Dune Over Dry Riverbed Under Noon Sun in across a wide valley floor in Grenada

Red Dune Over Dry Riverbed Under Noon Sun

by Carol Knapp

A towering red sand dune rises steeply from the floor of a wide valley in Grenada, its surface etched with wind-carved ridges that catch the flat glare of noon. Below, a dry riverbed cuts through the landscape, its pale stones against the deep terracotta of the slope. A brief monsoon sun shower creates a shimmering layer of reflected light across the valley floor, blurring the horizon where the air hangs heavy with moisture. The sky above is a washed-out blue, heavy with clouds that promise more rain. Fine grains of sand rest on the sharp edges of the dune, while the dry riverbed remains stark and empty. A wet patch of earth near the base of the slope mirrors the gray clouds directly above it.
