Seismograph Drum in Vancouver Volcanic Vault
Bright midday sunlight floods the interior of a concrete vault beneath a volcanic ridge, illuminating the brass and steel components of a seismograph drum. The cylindrical drum, wrapped in smoked paper, rotates slowly against a backdrop of rough gray concrete walls. Thin metal arms extend over the surface, their needle tips poised just above the moving sheet. Wind whips through unseen gaps, causing the paper to ripple slightly and the needle to jitter with minute vibrations. Dust motes float in the shafts of light, settling on the polished metal gears and the textured concrete floor. The precise analytical calm of the instrument contrasts with the chaotic energy of the external storm visible through a high vent. A fine scratch on the drum's rim catches the harsh sunlight.
