Seismograph Pen Tracing Fossil Lab Paper
by Jade Schmidt
Late afternoon sun falls through high windows, casting warm amber shadows across the dust-mottled concrete floor of a Roman fossil preparation room. A vintage seismograph rests on a steel table, its needle trembling slightly as it etches a jagged black line across fresh, white inked paper. The paper curls at the edges, showing the texture of heavy stock. Behind the instrument, shelves hold wrapped sediment blocks and wooden crates typical of the San Lorenzo district. Clean laboratory light reflects off the polished brass casing of the device, highlighting the dust motes suspended in the air. The ink line shifts direction abruptly, a tiny spike in the curve against the smooth, unmarked expanse of paper to the right. one drop of dried ink stains the metal base near the pivot point.
