Seismograph Drum in Almaty Volcanic Vault

A brass seismograph drum rotates slowly inside a rough concrete vault carved beneath a volcanic ridge near Almaty. Warm orange firelight from a nearby lantern washes the curved metal surface, highlighting the spiral ink trace on the paper roll. Low-hanging clouds press against the vault opening, casting soft gray shadows across the damp stone floor. The machinery sits on a heavy iron stand, its gears silent and still in the early summer night. Dust settles on the concrete walls, and the paper edge curls slightly under the tension of the drum. one drop of condensation rests on the metal casing near the base, reflecting the firelight.
