Volcanology Team Inspecting Steaming Vent Near Kobe
by Lois Moody
Soft, diffused light from an overcast sky flattens the contrast across a damp, industrial research site near Kobe. A team of volcanologists in high-visibility yellow jackets and hard hats clusters around a circular metal vent, where white steam rises steadily into the drizzle. Raindrops bead on the curved stainless steel casing of the monitoring equipment and slick the gray concrete floor. The group leans forward with disciplined focus, adjusting dials on a digital display unit mounted on a tripod. Converging lines of safety railings and metal grating draw toward the steaming vent in the distance. The air is thick with moisture, evidenced by the glistening surfaces and the way the steam mingles with the gray morning haze. A red warning light on the sensor array blinks rhythmically against the muted tones of the wet machinery.
