Seismograph trace and ash samples on corkboard

by Holly McKee

Green phosphor lines of a seismograph trace curve across a dark monitor screen, casting a cool glow on a corkboard surface nearby. Several clumps of gray volcanic ash sit in small glass vials, their rough textures catching the instrument light. The corkboard fills the frame with converging lines leading toward a vanishing point in the distance. Outside the glass, shadows stretch long and sharp, suggesting the deep midnight hour in Lhasa. Late spring air ripples faintly against the window, visible only as a slight distortion in the darkness beyond the glass. A thin red LED indicator blinks rhythmically at the bottom of the monitor, marking the steady pulse of the recording device against the stillness of the room.
