Seismograph Trace and Ash Samples on Corkboard

by Gabriella Shelton

Warm string lights cast a soft glow on a corkboard mounted near Swayambhu in the predawn darkness. A jagged seismograph trace is pinned centrally, its ink lines contrasting against the pale paper. To the left and right, small envelopes containing dark volcanic ash samples rest in neat rows. Metal housings with indicator lights reflect tiny points of orange and green on their curved surfaces. The cork texture shows pinholes and rough edges. The composition aligns the instruments and samples in perfect symmetry. A faint reflection of the red indicator light appears on the glossy plastic cover of the nearest ash envelope.
