Sandstone Hoodoo Rising in Jeddah Desert Heat

by Beau Ward

A towering sandstone hoodoo dominates the right third of the frame, its weathered surface etched with horizontal striations of ochre and rust. The stone rises from a flat, pale expanse of crushed gravel and sparse dry scrub. Bright, unfiltered sunlight strikes the formation directly, creating sharp contrasts between the sunlit face and the deep shadows tucked into its crevices. A visible heat haze shimmers in the air around the base, distorting the horizon line slightly. The sky above is a washed-out, intense blue, devoid of clouds. The texture of the rock appears rough and granular, showing signs of wind erosion. At the very bottom right, a small shadow from a low-lying shrub falls across the dusty ground.
