Downward Falling Smoke Hoodoo Desert Jordan in across a floodplain after rain in Jordan

Downward Falling Smoke Hoodoo Desert Jordan

by Toni Saunders

Thick, dark smoke pours downward from the jagged peak of a sandstone hoodoo, behaving like a heavy, viscous liquid rather than rising into the sky. The stone column stands isolated in a wide floodplain where wet earth reflects the harsh midsummer sun. Heat haze shimmers across the dry ground, distorting the horizon line where distant mountains meet the pale sky. The floodplain stretches out in muted browns and greys, crisscrossed by shallow pools of standing water. Shadows cut sharply across the rock's wind-sculpted ridges, showing the texture of eroded layers. The falling smoke creates a stark vertical line against the horizontal expanse, ending in a pool of dark vapor that settles on the damp soil without evaporating.
