Polished Desert Stones Under Cloudy Sky
by Dalton Klein
Bright midmorning sunlight floods a vast expanse of desert pavement in Saudi Arabia, illuminating thousands of dark, polished stones worn smooth by relentless wind. The stones form a tight, interlocking mosaic of charcoal, obsidian, and deep rust, their surfaces gleaming with a subtle, dry luster. Above, dramatic clouds stack in heavy layers, casting shifting patches of shadow that break the uniform darkness of the ground. The horizon stretches far into the distance, where faint mountain ridges meet the sky in a hazy line. No vegetation breaks the monotony of the stone field. The texture of the rocks varies from glass-like smoothness to rough, pitted edges where erosion has deepened. One shadow from a distant cloud edge falls across the foreground, highlighting the uneven, wind-sculpted topography of the desert floor.
