Salaryman Waiting in Tokyo
Flat noon light bleaches the narrow alleyway behind a Shinjuku ramen shop, where the steam from the vent creates a hazy screen against the brick. A salaryman in a rumpled suit stands waiting, his shadow sharp and geometric against the wet pavement, while the shop owner leans over the stainless steel counter to adjust a stack of white ceramic bowls. On the edge of the counter, a pair of orange rubber gloves rests near a metal ladle, their texture against the slick, reflective surface. Above, a tangled web of utility wires cuts across the sky, casting faint, irregular shadows that dance on the peeling turquoise paint of the adjacent building’s facade.
