A narrow alley in Shinjuku glows with the harsh blue-white spill of a convenience store sign, reflecting off wet pavement. A salaryman in a rumpled suit pauses beneath the awning, lighting a cigarette while steam rises from a nearby food cart. The vendor, an older woman in a yellow apron, stirs a pot of oden, her face illuminated by the orange glow of the heat lamp. Behind them, a faded red noren curtain hangs limp in the damp air. A discarded plastic umbrella lies crumpled near a drainage grate, its ribs bent.
