Delivery Worker in Tokyo
by Zara Franco
A narrow alleyway in Shinjuku glows with the diffuse, flat light of a winter noon, reflecting off the wet asphalt where a delivery worker pauses beside a stack of corrugated cardboard boxes. The worker’s gloved hand rests on the handle of a hand truck, the metal surface marked by the dark, smudged fingerprints of countless previous loads. Beside the cart, a small, frayed doormat lies slightly askew near the entrance of a family-run soba shop, its fibers matted from years of foot traffic. Above, a tangle of black utility cables cuts across the grey sky, framing a single potted chrysanthemum that has begun to wilt in the cold air.
