Tokyo Worker at Flat Noon Light
by Richard Wall
A narrow service alley in Tokyo’s Shimokitazawa district opens under the flat, shadowless glare of noon. The camera shows a vibrant, cluttered corner where a small ramen stall’s stainless steel prep table meets a wall of faded blue tiles. Darkened grout lines trace the history of steam and grease, against the bright red chili oil bottles lined up near the edge. A young worker in a white apron leans against the counter, checking a smartphone while a plastic dish drainer overflows with clean bowls. Above, ivy vines spill from a broken gutter, their green leaves catching the harsh light.
