Salaryman in Tokyo at Midday Light
by Willa Rangel
Rain-slicked asphalt reflects the flat gray sky above a narrow Tokyo alleyway where a salaryman in a charcoal suit pauses beside a vending machine. He holds a transparent plastic bag containing a single, bruised banana, his other hand adjusting a wet umbrella tip that drips onto his polished oxford shoe. Behind him, a narrow storefront window displays rows of canned coffee and tea, the glass smeared with condensation. A red and white 'Open' sign hangs crookedly, its neon tubing dim in the overcast light. To the left, a stack of cardboard boxes sits against a brick wall, damp and dark, while a bicycle leans precariously, its chain rusted.
