Eating Ramen in Tokyo

by Edwin Zhang

Under the soft diffusion of Tokyo dusk, a narrow alleyway in Shimokitazawa glows with the amber spill from a tiny ramen stall’s paper lantern. Rain slicks the concrete, reflecting the neon sign of a nearby pachinko parlor in long, distorted streaks. Inside the cramped, steam-fogged window, a salaryman in a damp grey suit hunches over a bowl of noodles, his reflection ghostly against the glass. On the counter beside him, a chipped ceramic tea kettle sits next to a discarded plastic bag, while a lone orange peel curls on a small saucer, its bright color stark against the wet, dark wood.
