Mist rests on the narrow alleyway between weathered wooden machiya facades, softening the harsh lines of the damp asphalt. A lone salaryman in a dark suit pauses beneath a faded red noren curtain, his breath visible in the chill air. On a low stone ledge beside a closed shutter, a chipped ceramic wash basin catches the diffuse gray light, its surface slick with condensation. A rusted iron doorknob on a nearby door reflects the muted sky, against the rough texture of the peeling plaster wall.
