Elephant on Ruined Textile Hall Rooftop

by Wilma Raymond

Rain-soaked timber beams sag under the weight of a decaying textile hall, their surfaces slick with water and peeling paint. One broken clerestory pane slices a beam of artificial light across the wet floor, illuminating floating dust and wet rags. Outside, the sky remains perfectly clear and dark, against the heavy, gray clouds of the rainy season visible in the distance. In the background, a full-grown elephant stands motionless on the flat rooftop, its gray skin reflecting the harsh, sweeping beam of light. The low angle emphasizes the crumbling cloisters and the impossible scale of the animal against the sky. A wet leather strap lies coiled in the foreground, dripping onto the cracked stone.
