Rowing Shell Swept by Lighthouse Light at Night in beside a fogbound harbor mouth near Kitwe

Rowing Shell Swept by Lighthouse Light at Night

by Jeff Chapman

Deep night fog pools low over the flat, dark water of the harbor mouth near Kitwe, obscuring the distant shoreline. A rowing shell four glides through the mist, its sleek hull reflecting the rhythmic sweep of a lighthouse beam. The light cuts a sharp, white arc across the black surface, illuminating the wet, varnished wood and the synchronized posture of the rowers. Thick ground fog rests on the water's edge, softening the transition between the river and the heavy, shadowed land. Converging lines of the waterway draw toward a vanishing point hidden in the gray haze. The beam's edge reveals droplets of mist hanging suspended in the air, while the dark water remains smooth and glassy beneath the boat. A final streak of light fades on the wake trailing behind the stern.
