Deep shadows swallow the narrow channels of the tidal maze, leaving only the curved gunwales of wooden boats visible against the gray water. Thin monsoon fog drifts low across the causeway, softening the distant reeds while the wet grain of the hulls remains sharp. Ropes coil in dark loops beside the planks, resting on the damp surface. A small lantern on the nearest deck emits a steady amber glow, cutting through the cool blue-gray mist. The water holds a mirror-like stillness, reflecting the faint rim of pale dawn light tracing the edges of the vessels without ripple.
