Autumn Flowers in Transylvanian Roman Bath Ruins in inside a roofless nave in Transylvania

Autumn Flowers in Transylvanian Roman Bath Ruins

by Jorge Rangel

Soft daylight falls through a roofless nave where ancient Roman brick arches frame a wild garden growing from the floor. Vibrant orange and yellow chrysanthemums burst directly from hairline fractures in the grey concrete slab and scattered ceramic tiles. Peak autumn leaves in russet and gold carpet the ground between the stone pillars. Heavy, dramatic clouds roll across the sky above the open roof, casting shifting shadows over the damp, weathered surfaces. The impossible blooms stand tall and rigid against the crumbling masonry, their petals sharp against the grey stone. A cluster of red flowers presses tightly against a broken column base, marking the boundary between stone and living plant.
