Rice Seedlings Bundled Near Hay Bales in Wolaita Sodo
by Greg Sellers
Tightly bound clusters of young green rice seedlings rest against a rough stack of golden hay bales, their fresh stems against the dry, fibrous texture of the dried fodder. Dappled sunlight falls through overhead leaves, casting shifting patterns of bright yellow and deep shadow across the bundles and the wet, mirrorlike surface of the paddy water beside them. The monsoon season is evident in the glistening sheen on the leaves and the saturated green of the distant fields. A strong wind whips the loose tips of the seedlings and ripples the still water, showing urgent motion. Layers of the landscape recede into the distance, where rows of crops fade into a hazy, green horizon under the bright late morning sky. The final edge of a wet hay bale shows a darkened stain where moisture has seeped into the straw.
