Rice Farmers Planting Seedlings in Dawn Light

Cool gray light spreads across a flooded paddy where wet rows of young rice seedlings stand in shallow water. Farmers bend forward in rhythmic rows, their dark clothing saturated by the damp air and heavy overcast sky above. The water surface reflects the flat white clouds, creating a seamless horizon between field and sky. Mud rests on the farmers' boots as they push into the soft earth, leaving small ripples that fade into the stillness. Long shadows stretch across the water, defined by the low angle of the first light. The texture of the wet soil contrasts with the smooth green shoots rising in neat lines. A reflection of a bent knee breaks the surface tension in the foreground water.
